Medusa’s Violent Beginning And End Had Us Like…

Artists have long depicted Medusa, a figure from ancient Greek mythology, in various art forms, often showing her in a state of anguish, screaming, or suffering.

The traditional portrayal of Medusa typically centers around her transformation into a monstrous creature with snakes for hair, capable of turning onlookers into stone with her gaze. This depiction often emphasizes her as a fearful and vengeful entity, perpetuating the narrative of her as a victim of divine punishment. However, this interpretation overlooks the complexities of her character and diminishes her agency.

In our design process, we sought to challenge these preconceptions by presenting Medusa as a figure of calmness, power, and knowing. Rather than depicting her in a state of agony or distress, we envisioned her with a serene expression, reflecting a sense of inner peace and confidence. By portraying her in this manner, we aimed to reclaim her narrative and highlight her resilience in the face of adversity.

Medusa’s story is one of resilience and strength, despite the challenges she faced. Cast out by society and cursed by the gods, she endured isolation and persecution. Yet, she emerged as a formidable force, capable of defending herself against those who sought to harm her. In our design, we sought to capture this strength and power, portraying Medusa as a symbol of resilience and empowerment.

When the last design emerged, we were quiet, reflective.

It’s a delicate pendant, and yet, her eyes are fierce.

All that fire.

We feel it in our bones.
